Ceremonies included using parts of the skeleton, most commonly the skull (calavera). Relatives placed native marigolds in the eye sockets to reflect the life that once was. The aromatic flowers adorned altars, said to invite the spirits to return this day. Now connected with the Catholic All Saints' Day, this festive event is a celebration of life.
